Coventry University and Coventry University Students’ Union take the safety of their students, staff and visitors very seriously. Following the rise in COVID-19 cases, the student’s union commissioned a series of visuals for a COVID-19 safety campaign, highlighting these important messages:

  • Wash your hands often.

  • Keep your distance.

  • Wear a mask.

  • Stay in your bubble.

  • Download the App.

I created a series of GIFs, digital assets and posters that can be displayed in the university buildings and online. The graphics are bold, playful and upbeat to effectively engage the audience, communicating the important messages in a very accessible way. They offer a step-change from more authoritarian, corporate visuals the audience may already have encountered to communicate these messages. The ‘Stay Safe’ ident encapsulates the essence of the COVID-19 safety campaign, tying each of the five individual messages together.

The objective was to outline COVID-19 safety requirements in a way that was friendly, engaging and helpful. To achieve this, I used a sans serif font, with slightly rounded corners, to give a fun and friendly look to the campaign. The striking colour palette ensures this friendly and playful feel is conveyed throughout the whole series of graphics. The whimsical characters are designed in a variety of different shapes, sizes and colours to represent the diverse nature of the university community.
